Once upon a time, there was a king, who was hunting. After he had walked for a while, he got tired and hungry so he couldn’t walk any further. Then he met a troll with three heads. “If you will give me the first thing you find when you come back to your castle, I will show you the way back home,” the troll said. The king agreed to that, because there was a dog that always met him, and he didn’t like that dog.
The troll showed him his way, and soon he saw his castle. When he came home, the first thing he met was his daughter, the princess, and that wasn’t good.
Then the king became sad, and didn’t know what to do. Then he told everyone, that the one who told when the troll was coming should get the princess as his queen and half the kingdom, so that the troll wouldn’t get his way.
The first Thursday evening the boy was shepherding, the troll came rowing over the fjord with crashing noises and rumbles, and the water became as red as blood.
As soon as the troll came to shore and wanted to get up to the castle, the pig shepherd sent “Tear” on it. It looked like he bit the troll until the troll died. The boy cut out its tongue and one of its heads. Another man who said he would take care of the princess, took the head and ran home with it. Since the troll didn’t lose all his heads, he woke up after a while and went home.
The next Thursday evening the troll went back – more awful than last time. The troll growled even worse than ever before. The pig shepherd sent “Pull” on him. He killed the troll. The boy cut out his tongue and the other head, but the other protectors took the skull. But after a while the troll woke up again. It still had one head left.
The third Thursday evening the troll came rowing over the fjord again, it looked like the water was boiling, and the growling sounded like a thunderstorm. This time the pig shepherd sent his strongest and most awesome dog “Bite-to-death” on him, this became the biggest fight ever. This time the troll eventually died. The boy cut out the third tongue and the third head.
The shepherd went back to the castle. One of the three wealthy men came back with three heads and said that he was the winner. Then the pig shepherd had something to say: “Yes, here are the heads, but where are the tongues?” None of the wealthy men could show the tongues to the king, but the pig shepherd could. The king gave him the princess and half the kingdom. The three smart dogs, “Tear”, “Pull” and “Bite-to-death” protected him for the rest of his life.
