The King who had three lazy sons

E-mail Print PDF

Once upon a time, there was a king who had had three sons and a daughter. These sons were so lazy that their father couldn’t get them to do anything.  They wanted to sleep all day.Their father both threatened and bribed them. They always wanted to sleep all day unless they were eating. And even then they sometimes fell asleep.  Their sister worked hard around the clock and she often complained about how lazy her brothers were. In the end, the King made his daughter heir of the throne to both the King’s castle and his kingdom. But still he told his sons even though he saw that they were no good;” the laziest son shall receive my kingdom after I have passed away”. The oldest one said; “If I put my foot into the fire, I would let my heel burn off before I do anything but sleep.”The middle brother said;“If I had a rope around my neck, and then hanged myself with a knife in my hand, I wouldn’t even cut the rope.”The youngest one said:“I want to sleep so much that if I got something in my eye, I would rather wait for it to come out by itself than get anybody to take it out.”                “Oh yes,” their father said. “I believe you, but now I’m sending you away. That way you can try to make it on your own.And so they were sent away from the castle. When they had left their father, there was nobody to feed them and they no longer had a place to sleep. They couldn’t work, and it was shameful to beg because everybody knew them, and it was dangerous to steal. They said to someone;“We’d better get going. There is no other option.”The oldest one came into a forest. There he met someone who burned coal. And he said;“Dear friend, give me some food and I shall help you with the coal and put it out.”He got some food, and then he was going to put the coal out. But instead of pouring water on it, he went on top of it and stepped on it. He stomped so far into the coal and he burnt his foot so badly that the other man took him by horse back to the King. The second son reached a forest, and there he met two men who were gathering dead leaves to be dried.“Dear fellow friends,” he said, “give me some food and I will help you.”They gave him some food, and they placed him on the second floor to catch the rope. By accident he slipped with the rope wrapped around his neck, and he ended up hanging from it. If he hadn’t got help he would have died that instant. They gave him a horse and sent him back to his father. The youngest son went into a forest and after walking miles and miles, he came to a farm. There was a man working in the barn. The son said:“Oh dear man, give me some food and I will help you with your work.”He got some food, but when he was going to work, he didn’t know what to do. As he was working, he kicked up a pile of dust and made it fly around. Something sharp flew into his eye, and it made him scream in pain. They had to take a horse and let him ride back to his father. But the king’s daughter became happy in every way. After a long time, she married a prince from England, and that way she became queen of two kingdoms.
