The greedy farmer’s crop

E-mail Print PDF

Once upon a time there was a lonely man who lived on the outskirts of the town by the stream bank. Though farms used to keep cattle and crops producing a large number of vegetables, his were not productive in either of them, since he did not feel himself able to take care of both animals and plants. So this man, absorved in his despair, knew that the only way to survive was to steal from his two neighbours living next to him. He usually stole as much crop as she could to get highly satisfied and make believe beasts or the weather  were the actual doers by flooding the orchards with water taken out of the brook. When he grew accostumed to live by his wits, this man, just talking to his neighbours, became aware that they were  leaving away because they could not get enough to make a living. The man got worried and headed for the store to check if he had a good stock of food and found he had nothing. He knew that the only way to feed himself was to grow up his own products. So he went to a barn to get a plough, manure and seeds, but when he was about to sow , it started to rain and thunder roughly.

The pig shepherd that won the princess and half the kingdom

Once upon a time, there was a king, who was hunting. After he had walked for a while, he got tired and hungry so he couldn’t walk any further. Then he met a troll with three heads. “If you will give me the first thing you find when you come back to your castle, I will show you the way back home,” the troll said. The king agreed to that, because there was a dog that always met him, and he didn’t like that dog.

Lots of wealthy men from many countries showed up. Among those, there was an Ashlad that said he could shepherd the king’s pigs and take care of the princess as well. He brought with him three dogs to help him, one was called “Tear”, the other was called “Pull” and the third one was called “Bite-to-death”. Yes, the Ashlad became a pig shepherd, and went out to the pig’s meadow which was beside a big Fjord.

The troll showed him his way, and soon he saw his castle. When he came home, the first thing he met was his daughter, the princess, and that wasn’t good.

Eating contest: The Ashlad VS the troll

E-mail Print PDF

Once upon a time there was a farmer who had three sons. He was in a bad condition, old and weak, and the sons wouldn’t do anything to help him. On the farm they owned a big forest that was grand and green, and the father wanted his sons to cut down the trees in the forest to pay off some debt. After a long time the father made his sons do it, and the oldest son went first.
When he came to the forest and started to cut down an old bearded tree, the troll came.

“If you are chopping in my forest, I shall kill you,” said the troll.

When the boy heard that, he threw the axe away and ran home as fast as he could.
He came home, out of breath from all the running, and told what had happened to him. The father said that he was a weak person; a troll had never scared him from cutting trees.
The next day it was the second son’s turn, and the same happened to him as the first one. The troll came to him, and the boy threw away the axe and ran home as the first one, only faster.
When he came home, the father was so angry and told them that the troll would never scare him away from cutting down trees when he was younger.

The Ashlad and the good helpers

E-mail Print PDF

Once upon a time there was a king, and that king had heard about a ship that could sail as fast at sea as at land; so he wanted one too. And to the one who could build it, he promised the princess and half the kingdom. He told everyone on the hill outside the church. A lot of people tried, you know, half the kingdom could come in handy, so they thought, and the princess wouldn’t be too bad to have either, but it didn’t go well with most of them.

There were three brothers in a village; the oldest Per, the other Pål and the youngest Espen Ashlad. He got his name because he always used to sit and dig in the ashes. The Sunday the king told about the ship he wanted, the Ashlad was by the church too. When he came home and told the news, Per, the oldest one, asked his mother for lunch; because he wanted to go and try to build the ship and win the princess and half the kingdom.

When he had got his lunch bag on his neck, he went away. On the road he met an old man, who was so crooked and pious.

The man who did the chores

E-mail Print PDF

The man who did the choresOnce upon a time there was an old man who was grumpy and crazy. He was not pleased with his wife because he didn’t think she did enough chores. When he came home one night during the harvest he yelled and cursed.“Oh dear husband, don’t be cruel”, the wife said. Tomorrow we will swap work. I will do the harvesting and you can do the cooking and chores. The man liked her suggestion and agreed. Early in the morning the wife took the scythe and started harvesting with the other men. Meanwhile the husband took care of the house. First he was going to make butter, but after he had churned a while he got thirsty and went down to the basement to get some beer. While he was down in the basement he could hear the pig had found its way into the house.  He ran up into the kitchen with the beer tap in his hand hoping the pig hadn’t tipped over the cream. But when he figured the pig already had tipped over the cream and was licking it off the floor, he got so furious he forgot the beer barrel and started chasing the pig. When he caught the pig and kicked it, he remembered the beer barrel in the basement. When he came down the barrel was empty.
