Fairy Tales Comentaries

Features of a Norwegian fairy tale

E-mail Print PDF

Norwegian fairy tales have certain features that are typical of this genre. Try to find examples of these features.

1.    The law of three (do things happen three times? Are there three of anything?)

2.    Other magical numbers are seven and twelve. Can you find examples of these numbers?

3.    The characters in fairytales are types; either good OR bad. Who is what?

4.    Often fairy tales have helpers and/or adversaries (opponents). Are there examples of this in this fairy tale?

5.    The protagonist (main character) has to overcome obstacles (problems) to reach his goal. What obstacles are these?

6.    The protagonist meets early a goal he has to reach. What goal has The Ashlad in this fairy tale?

7.    The Ashlad and his brothers are two different types where the brothers are acting as one individual. What types are these?

In addition, all Norwegian fairy tales are always:

o       told chronologically (from beginning to end)

o       And they are never connected to a certain time or place

Here are some suggestions as to what you can do with our fairy tale. My suggestion is that you and Nuria have a look at these suggestions and choose the ones you think are relevant to your students. We don’t know them and how much they know about Nordic folklore, so choose some and do them.

1)        Translate the fairy tale into Spanish

2)        What might be typical Norwegian in this fairy tale?

3)        What is the moral of the Fairy tale?

4)        What super natural features are there in the fairy tale? (The characters etc)

5)        Similarities/differences to the Mediterranean Fables

6)        Write a similar fairy tale yourselves

7)        Dramatise the fairy tale, or parts of it. (Performed during the visit?)

8)        Search the internet and find what is typical of Norwegian Fairy Tales. From what they find; is this a typical fairy tale?

9)        Watch the movie. I have it on a DVD. If you’re interested I could send it to you (but it’s in Norway so you’ll have to wait until January). It’s in Norwegian so maybe watching parts of it also could give an impression of what Norwegian sounds like. Did the movie look like what they had expected? (It shows Norwegian nature and national costumes)

Feel free to alter these suggestions from your own thoughts and experiences.
